Commemorating Sinking Gneisenau Malaga

The Virgen del Carmen’s Blessing of the Malaga Waters

The Virgen del Carmen del Perchel, the patron saint of sailors, is carried in a grand procession through the streets of Malaga to the Cathedral. Upon reaching the port, she is placed aboard a tugboat and paraded around the bay, blessing the waters as the Salve Marinera plays in the background. Along the way, the procession pauses to meet divers who retrieve another image of the Virgin from the seabed—a deeply rooted tradition that makes this celebration truly unmissable.
