Arrive by your own means in El Ferrol and enjoy the town as you prepare to start your English Camino. Accommodation in El Ferrol with breakfast included.
Currently, only pilgrims that have walked a minimum of 100 km or cycled at least 200 km can receive the “Compostela Certificate”. La Corunna is less than 100 km from Compostela and, as a result, many pilgrims choose to start their English Camino from El Ferrol. As you embark on this beautiful yet challenging pilgrimage, keep in mind that the iconic yellow arrow signs may often be absent. Oddly enough, when they are visible, they can sometimes lead to confusion about the correct path. The best tip is to trust your instincts and consistently head south.
The initial section of the English Camino takes you through a region with an extensive road network and many facilities related to the naval and military sectors. Starting from the “Ferrol das Curuxeiras” port, the path leads towards the A Gándara industrial zone, where you can visit notable sites like the military Church of San Francisco, the Arsenal, and the Co-Cathedral of San Xián. As you walk alongside the mouth of the River Ferrol, you’ll notice the railway that connects Ferrol to Betanzos. Shortly after, you’ll arrive at San Martiño de Xubia monastery, one of Galicia’s oldest. After crossing the Muiño bridge over the Xubia river, you’ll reach Neda.
After we leave Neda, our next destination is Fene, which is well-known for its shipyards. The route then ascends through the mountains until we reach the main road. For a while, we travel alongside the road until we arrive at Cabanas, where we can explore the church of San Martiño do Porto and the beach of Magdalena. We stroll leisurely along the promenade and cross the bridge that leads us to the charming town of Pontedeume. From there, we continue on to Breamo, Buiña, Viadero, and Bañobre. At this point, the English Camino takes us over a medieval bridge spanning the river Baxoi, and after a short walk, we arrive at the first buildings in Miño. The stage concludes in Miño, where we cross the river Baxoi on a unique medieval bridge with a single arch.
From a scenic perspective, this section of the route is the most captivating, as it winds through a rural, mountainous, and secluded area filled with small villages focused on livestock farming. Starting from Miño on Calle Real, we travel through a stunning coastal landscape until we arrive at the Ponte de Porco and the lovely temple of San Pantaleón de las Viñas. Here, the English Camino leads us into a challenging and steep segment that takes us to the village of Matacabalos and then to Souto.
After this brief stretch, we begin our descent toward Betanzos, enjoying expansive views of the estuary and marshes along the way. This scenic route brings us to the charming town of Betanzos, where we enter through one of the well-preserved gates of the medieval wall. We then navigate through the old town to the Praza de García Hermanos, home to the Arquivo do Reino de Galicia (Archive of the Kingdom of Galicia). Additionally, we can explore the hermitage of Ntra. Sra. de Los Remedios and admire one of the most beautiful crosses in Galicia.
Our journey takes us out of Betanzos by O Rolo street and across the As Cascas bridge. We then travel through the villages of O Coto, Campoeiro, and Xanrozo until we arrive at Abegondo. Here, we cross the Limiñón bridge and enjoy a nice stroll along the river before crossing the Presedo bridge, where we can admire the San Antonio de Cos temple. We then continue on to Francos, Bocelo, and Vilardel. After passing through A Malata, Monte, Fontela, and Vizoño, the route ascends into the mountains, leading us to the point where the two branches of the English Camino converge in the municipality of Mesía, ultimately reaching Mesón do Vento.
On the final section of the route we travel along peaceful, rural roads and gentle hills. First, from Bruma to the village of Ordes while passing through the villages of O Seixo, Carreira, Mámoas, and A Carballeira,. Then, we enter a hilly area that leads to A Rúa. After passing the Trabe mill and the O Cubo bridge, the path continues to Outeiro de Abaixo, where it takes a forested trail to reach the church of San Xulián de Poulo in Outeiro de Arriba. Following A Senra and A Rúa, the route arrives at Carballo, goes through Casanova de Pereiro, and crosses the Ponte Pereira bridge, which may date back to medieval times, before concluding today’s stage in Santa Cruz de Montaos.
Our final leg takes us to Baxoia, which leads us to Sigüeiro. Leaving Sigüeiro, we follow Calle Real, keeping to the right and taking a dirt path that runs alongside the motorway. This path will lead you to Sionlla, where you can catch a glimpse of Compostela as you cross the bridge over the Tambre River. The journey continues alongside the river until we reach A Barciela, then crosses the Tambre industrial area towards Meixonfrío, eventually entering the heart of Santiago through Cruceiro da Coruña.
From this point, the route takes you through some of the city’s most charming neighborhoods, including Santa Clara, San Roque, Algalia, and Azabachería, before culminating at the stunning Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
