DAY 2. CACERES – BADAJOZ: Morning trip to Caceres, declared patrimony of humanity, with official guide. Its Almohad walls and buildings of incalculable historical and architectural value make this town a portrait of the 14th to 16th centuries, as is clear from its fortresses, palaces and religious buildings. Return to the hotel for lunch. Afternoon excursion to Badajoz with official guide. Badajoz preserves its Moorish Alcazaba and important remains of the old mosque. The town hall and the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. Return to the hotel, dinner and accommodation.
DAY 3. MÉRIDA: Morning excursion to Merida with official guide, the ancient “Emérita Augusta”, situated on the silver road that linked Seville with Gijon. Inside the city are Trajan’s Arch, the remains of the temples of Diana, Mars and Mithras. But the most important site is the theatre of Hadrian (2nd century) and the amphitheatre (entrance included). Mérida also has the Museum of Roman Art, the work of Rafael Moneo, which is considered one of the best in the world. Lunch in a restaurant. Free afternoon, dinner and accommodation.
DAY 4. ÉLVAS – OLIVENZA: Morning excursion to Élvas. Surrounded by a 17th century wall, you will enter the historic centre through one of the fortress gates. There are seven bastions and the fortresses of Santa Luzia and Nossa Senhora da Graça. The late Gothic cathedral, which also has Moorish influences, dates from the reign of Manuel I (1495-1521). The city has an aqueduct built between 1498 and 1622. Return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, visit to Olivenza, a beautiful town of Portuguese origin that preserves the coat of arms of Portugal, as well as its castle in the city centre, the parish church of La Magdalena with its Plateresque façade and interior with Manueline Gothic tracery, and the Hospital de la Caridad, which resembles a museum of Portuguese Baroque tiles. Return to the hotel, dinner and accommodation.
DAY 5. GUADALUPE – TRUJILLO: Morning excursion to the village of Guadalupe and the Monastery of Guadalupe, which houses the image of the patron saint of Extremadura. The monastery has two cloisters, but the treasures of Guadalupe are kept in the sacristy. Lunch in a restaurant. In the afternoon, visit to Trujillo, its oldest part, called “la villa” (the town), is built on a hill with its imposing Moorish towers. The main square is a real “Conquerors’ forum” where the equestrian statue of Pizarro and the palace of the conquest built by his brother Hernando stand. Return to the hotel, dinner and accommodation.
DAY 6. BADAJOZ – PLACE OF ORIGIN: Early morning departure to your place of origin, lunch at the client’s own expense. Arrival, end of the trip.
NOTE: The programme is subject to the transport regulations of 11/04/07, which affect both driving hours and drivers’ rest periods, so the order in which it is carried out may vary, but not its content.
Organising your trip needs time and care to make sure everything goes smoothly. The more time you can give me to organise whatever you require: flights, transfers, golf courses, green fees, tee times, a day trip for the days you don’t play golf, a fishing trip, a visit to one of the major cities in Andalusia, especially if you would like to visit the Alhambra in Granada. The waiting list for tickets to see the whole complex is long. And, when they’re gone, they’re gone!
